Ask any experienced poultry manager what causes the most costly outbreaks and the answer is rarely exotic. Disease usually walks, drives or is carried onto the farm — on a visitor’s boots, on the wheels of a feed truck, or inside a newly purchased animal that looked perfectly healthy at the market. Biosecurity is simply the set of habits that keep those pathways closed. It costs far less than treatment, and on a well-run farm it becomes second nature.

Control who and what comes in

Every farm needs a clear boundary between the outside world and the animals. Keep a single, controlled entry point for vehicles and people wherever possible. Ask visitors to park away from animal housing, and provide clean footwear or a disinfectant footbath at the entrance to each shed. Delivery drivers and buyers rarely need to walk among your animals at all — arrange loading and collection at the perimeter.

Quarantine every new arrival

The single most important rule when buying stock is to isolate new animals before they join the herd or flock. A quarantine period of two to four weeks lets hidden infections show themselves before they can spread. House new arrivals separately, feed and handle them last, and watch closely for coughing, scouring, lameness or loss of appetite. This is also the ideal window to deworm, vaccinate and treat for external parasites so that animals enter the main group clean.

Keep housing, feed and water clean

Pathogens thrive in damp bedding, spilled feed and stagnant water. Clean and disinfect pens between batches, store feed where rodents and wild birds cannot reach it, and scrub water troughs regularly rather than simply topping them up. Dry, well-ventilated housing does more to prevent respiratory disease than almost any medicine.

Separate the sick, respect the dead

Move visibly sick animals to a dedicated hospital pen at the first sign of trouble, and always tend to healthy animals before sick ones. Dispose of dead stock promptly and correctly — carcasses left on the farm are a reservoir of infection for the whole herd and for scavengers that spread it further.

Work with your veterinarian

Biosecurity is most effective as part of a written herd-health plan. Your veterinarian can help you match a vaccination and parasite-control programme to the diseases that actually circulate in your area, and can advise on which disinfectants are effective against them. Prevention planned in advance always beats treatment bought in a hurry.

None of these measures is complicated or expensive. What they require is consistency — the same routine, every day, applied by everyone who works on the farm. That discipline is the foundation every other part of animal health is built on.

Calves, lambs and kids are born with almost no protection against infection. Unlike humans, they receive very few antibodies through the placenta, so a newborn’s immune defence depends almost entirely on the first milk its mother produces — colostrum. Getting colostrum right in the first hours of life is one of the highest-value things a livestock keeper can do, and it costs nothing but attention.

Why colostrum matters so much

Colostrum is thick, yellowish and far richer than ordinary milk. It carries a concentrated dose of maternal antibodies, along with energy, protein, vitamins and factors that help the newborn gut mature. Animals that receive enough good colostrum early are dramatically less likely to suffer scours, pneumonia and early death, and they tend to grow faster for months afterwards.

The rule of the first feed

The newborn gut can only absorb whole antibodies for a short window after birth. Absorption is highest in the first few hours and has largely closed by around 24 hours. That is why the guiding principle is simple: quality, quickly, in quantity, and kept clean.

  • Quickly — aim for the first feed within the first two hours of life, and certainly within six.
  • Quantity — a newborn calf should receive roughly ten percent of its body weight in colostrum over the first day; lambs and kids need proportionally generous feeds too.
  • Quality — the first milking from a healthy, well-fed dam is best. Thick, early colostrum carries more antibodies than thin, late milk.
  • Clean — collect and feed colostrum hygienically, because dirty equipment can undo all the benefit.

When the dam cannot provide

Sometimes a mother dies, rejects her young, or produces too little. Plan for this in advance by freezing surplus colostrum from healthy dams in small, labelled portions. Thaw it gently in warm water rather than boiling, which destroys the antibodies. A stored supply can save a newborn that would otherwise have no protection at all.

Watch the ones that miss out

Weak, premature or twin newborns often fail to nurse effectively on their own. These animals need hands-on help — assisted suckling or careful bottle or tube feeding. A newborn that has not fed within a few hours should never be left to sort itself out.

Good colostrum management does not require special equipment or expense. It requires a keeper who is present at birth, who acts within hours rather than days, and who understands that those first feeds set the trajectory for the animal’s entire productive life.

Internal parasites are a quiet drain on livestock productivity. Worms rarely kill outright, but they steal weight gain, cut milk yield, dull coats and leave animals vulnerable to other diseases. The instinct is to deworm everything on a fixed schedule — but that habit wastes money, and worse, it is the fastest way to breed parasites that no longer respond to treatment. A strategic plan does better on both counts.

Understand the burden before you treat

Not every animal carries a damaging worm load, and not every season poses the same risk. Parasite pressure rises in warm, wet conditions and on pasture that has been grazed heavily. Faecal egg counts — a simple laboratory test your veterinarian can arrange — tell you whether a group actually needs treating, and later whether the treatment worked. Testing turns guesswork into decisions.

Treat strategically, not reflexively

Focus dewormers where they deliver the most benefit: young growing stock, which are most susceptible; animals in late pregnancy and early lactation, when demand is highest; and any group showing weight loss, scouring or bottle jaw. Adult animals in good condition often carry parasites without harm and help maintain a population of worms that has never met the drug — which, counter-intuitively, protects the drug’s future effectiveness.

Protect your dewormers from resistance

Anthelmintic resistance is now a serious problem worldwide, and once it develops it does not go away. A few disciplines slow it down:

  • Dose correctly — weigh animals or dose to the heaviest in the group, never underdose.
  • Rotate wisely — change the class of dewormer used according to veterinary advice, not simply the brand name.
  • Avoid over-treating — leaving some healthy adults untreated preserves susceptible worms.
  • Quarantine-dose new arrivals — treat and hold incoming animals so they do not import resistant worms.

Combine treatment with grazing management

Medicine works best alongside good husbandry. Rotating pasture, avoiding grazing young stock on the most contaminated fields, and resting paddocks all reduce the number of larvae animals pick up in the first place. The less exposure, the less you need to reach for the drench gun.

Make it a written plan

Work with your veterinarian to build a parasite-control programme matched to your species, region and production system, and record what you treat and when. A plan on paper, reviewed each season and adjusted with egg-count results, will outperform any fixed calendar — and will keep your dewormers effective for years to come.

Treat the sick, do not mask poor management

Antibiotics are a treatment for infection, not a substitute for hygiene, ventilation, nutrition or vaccination. Farms that rely on routine medication to hold back disease are usually treating a management problem in the wrong way. Investing in biosecurity, clean water, dry housing and a sound vaccination programme reduces the need for antibiotics in the first place — which is better for the animals and cheaper for the farm.

Diagnose before you treat

Many conditions that look similar have different causes, and antibiotics do nothing against viruses or parasites. Working with a veterinarian to reach a diagnosis — supported by laboratory testing where appropriate — means the right animals get the right treatment, and medicines are not wasted on problems they cannot solve.

Observe withdrawal periods

Every veterinary antibiotic carries a withdrawal period: the time that must pass after treatment before milk or meat from that animal is safe to enter the food chain. Respecting these periods protects consumers and keeps residues out of food. Keep clear treatment records so that no treated animal’s produce is sold too soon.

Keep good records

A simple treatment log — what was used, on which animal, at what dose, and when — is the backbone of responsible use. It helps you spot recurring problems, supports your veterinarian’s advice, and demonstrates to buyers and regulators that your farm uses medicines properly.

Vitamins A, D and E matter most in supplementation. Vitamin A supports vision, immunity and reproduction; vitamin D governs calcium use and bone health, especially for housed animals with little sunlight; vitamin E, partnered with selenium, protects tissues and boosts immune defence. Animals on fresh green forage usually fare well, but those on stored, dry or poor-quality feed through a long dry season often need support.

More is not better. The goal is to correct genuine shortfalls, not to pour in excess.
